The Graduate Program in History at UFRN was established in 2004 as an Academic Master's program. At that time, the proposal was innovative in adopting a rarely explored approach in historiography: the relationship between History & Spaces. Specifically, the objective was to denaturalize space by problematizing the geopolitical and spatial dimensions of historical events. Just like the concepts that symbolically represent it — Nation, Village, Province, Region, East, West, North, South, Northeast, Southeast, among others — the program's aim is to understand space as a construct that must be historically investigated. The originality of this area of concentration attracted researchers not only from Rio Grande do Norte but from across the Northeast and even other regions of Brazil, contributing to the program’s consolidation and maturity. As a result, in 2019, the PPGH/UFRN launched its first PhD cohort and began to operate with the three lines of research that continue to guide the program today. Its faculty is composed of professors from UFRN and other higher education and federal technical institutions (IES and EBTTs), all holding doctoral and postdoctoral degrees from both national and international institutions.
