The Postgraduate Program in Science and Mathematics Teaching (PPGECM) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) began its activities in the doctorate program in August 2015 and the academic master's degree program in August 2017. Capes recognizes it in the Teaching area with concept 4.

The mission of PPgECM is "to train human resources with solid training in the area, who can propose, develop and participate in the development of research and production of knowledge in the area of science and mathematics teaching, with a view to the implementation and implementation of projects that promote development national, regional and local, with a focus on building citizenship. We intend to train and monitor the professional (our graduate), whether as a teacher, researcher, or differentiated trainer, active in projects and actions that focus on processes and/or products that promote the improvement of the quality of teaching and learning in Basic Education and Initial Training and continued supply of teachers to teach in this area".
It has an area of concentration: Science and Mathematics Teaching, which is characterized by research in Physics Teaching, Chemistry Teaching, Biology Teaching, and Mathematics Education. There are two lines of research:
a) Learning, teaching, and teacher training in science and mathematics, which focuses on issues related to the teaching and learning process of Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and Mathematics and teacher training;
b) Culture, epistemology, and education in Science and Mathematics focus on teaching and learning science and teacher training. This process is related to questions of a historical and epistemological nature.

PPGECM considers among its training objectives the following:
• Provide training for teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and broad and in-depth scientific training, developing individual research capacity and creativity;
• Train doctors and masters committed to research, construction, and dissemination of knowledge in Teaching Natural Sciences and Mathematics to carry out teaching, research, extension, and professional activities in educational institutions of all levels of education and in other fields where work in this area of knowledge is possible;
• Stimulate and enrich the production and socialization of knowledge of both teachers, students, and graduates in the field of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Teaching through scientific publications and other forms of dissemination;
• Contribute to the insertion of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Teaching in all spaces of formal and non-formal education and its continuous and critical reflection.
• Monitor and support the actions of male and female graduates of the Program.

PPgECM's target audience is primary education and higher education teachers who work in the area or master's and/or graduates who are interested in their training. The expected graduate profile is a Doctor and Master with scientific and cultural training, capable of training human resources and carrying out research in the area.

With these objectives, PPGECM hopes to contribute to developing research and production of science and mathematics teaching knowledge and implement projects that promote national, regional, and local development, focusing on building citizenship.
The course has a faculty of researchers and educators with experience in producing knowledge and training human resources at undergraduate and postgraduate levels (master's and doctorate) in the teaching area.
