The Postgraduate Program in Geography (GEOCERES) is a postgraduate program linked to the Seridó Higher Education Center (CERES) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Caicó campus, which began operating on March 11, 2019 and has been offering, since then, on a regular and in-person basis, the academic master's degree in Geography. Its area of concentration is “Space and Landscape in the Northeastern Semi-Arid”, covered by two lines of research: “Socio-Spatial Dynamics in the Semi-Arid” and “Structure and Dynamics of Landscapes in the Semi-Arid”.
In coherence with the area of concentration and lines of research, the program aims to train professionals at academic master's level in the area of Geography with competence to develop studies on Semiarid Geography, on topics such as: morphodynamics and pedodynamics; water resources; coastal environments; geographic climatology; geodiversity and geoconservation; integrated coastal zone management; environmental risks and vulnerability; urban dynamics and city structure; rural space and agrarian studies; economic and territorial dynamics; culture and population dynamics; society-nature relationship, among others.
Through its area of concentration and its lines of research, GEOCERES' strong connection with the field of investigation centered on the Semiarid region is highlighted, analyzed in the light of geographic theories that encompass the natural, environmental, social, economic, cultural, political dimensions and territories of the region. Clearly, the Semiarid region assumes centrality in the research and debates carried out within the scope of GEOCERES, which extends to the disciplines offered, the events held, the teaching, research and extension projects carried out, the products and publications generated. This is, without a doubt, a difference that makes GEOCERES a postgraduate program that departs from the objective reality of the Semiarid region.
